5 Ways To Be Sustainable This Festival Season

by | Jun 3, 2022

Festival season is approaching! We are all looking forward to festival season, whether you’re a full weekend camper or a day visitor. Music, dancing, fun, laughter and general good vibes. But hangovers aren’t the only bad thing that comes from festivals. The amount of waste left behind is staggering. We’ve outlined some simple ways to make festival season more sustainable.

Reusables

Bring a refillable cup! There are loads of drinking water taps on site, that you can use to refill your water cup. You can also use your cup for alcohol, and a morning coffee! Vendors will be happy to put your beverage in your cup for you. This will reduce your plastic use over the festival period significantly! If you must use plastic, make sure you recycle everything in the recycling area on site.

Fashion

We all love getting a new outfit for an upcoming festival. Try and buy vintage and avoid fast fashion. Novelty festival clothing may be fun, but its usually worn once, and is adding to the waste of the fast fashion industry. Borrow your friends’ clothes or shop vintage! There are loads of fun festival pieces available on depop! Invest in a rain jacket. Disposable ponchos are convenient but really damaging to the environment.

Use Biodegradable Glitter

On the subject of looking glam for festival season, one of its major drawbacks is glitter. For something so tiny, glitter is having big negative effects on the environment. Most glitter products are made with plastic and are adding to the problem of microplastics. When microplastics are washed down the drain and into the ocean, they are very damaging to marine life. But don’t fret, you can keep sparkling this festival season by switching to biodegradable glitter! Biodegradable glitter is made from plant derived materials rather than plastic. When you remove it, it will wash down the drain and will disappear before it reaches the ocean! Check out our beautiful range of BioGlitter!

Rubbish

Anything you leave behind at a festival will be sent to landfill. If you do have a lot of waste by the end of the weekend, please clean up after yourself. This includes your tent, not all tents that are left behing are sent to homeless shelters, so please don’t leave yours on the site. A weekend of fun isn’t worth it if it damages the earth.

Travel

Use public transport to get to the festival, or carpool! Getting the bus may seem like a pain if you’re carrying a tonne of stuff, but at least you won’t be stuck in traffic behind rows of cars filled with festival goers. You might even make some festival friends on the way! If you are travelling by car and have a spare seat, find someone to fill it. One less car on the road makes a huge difference!

If we all take these small steps towards sustainability, festival season will be much more earth friendly. Our fun shouldn’t damage the planet!
